Centre of the Book

We spent two Tuesday mornings in the Company Gardens in central Cape Town. The first day I tried to paint this and failed dismally. The next week I used charcoal in an attempt to capture the architectural beauty of the building. Now I must try to paint it again! I love charcoal!

It is lovely, Carol!!! What is the difference in your technique and attitude when you are painting and when you are doing charcoal? Are you more fearless with one? This drawing shows great skill and courage. Also, having done this as a painting already, maybe you didn't have any expectations and gave yourself permission to screw up! Hence the ease and confidence that you are showing here. :)

You are a wonderful drawer, Carol! This is a very difficult subject and I admire your courage to tackle it again and really overcome your disappointment with your first attempt. Good luck with painting it now.

Thank you Kath. Wow, is it that obvious! I really feel at home with charcoal as it has no colour! I have always been terrified of colour and it is taking me a long time to overcome this. Practice, practice, practice! I don't think there is any quick fix!

Thank you Di. It is a hugely challenging bit of architecture and I have a true Capricorn stuborness!!! Not sure when the painting will happen though....

Your sketch is wonderful, perfect composition. You do need to paint it again, I agree. Don't let it beat you, lol.

Hi again Carol. I've been thinking about your comment that you are "...terrified of colour..." I used to be before I had the palette that I have now. If you would like my list of colours, you can email me on my site and I will send it to you along with my colour mixing notes. I have all my students do these colour mixing exercises before they start painting. You are too good to be afraid of anything!!!!! :)
