LIFE BEGINS AT 50 - HOW IT ALL BEGAN

At the end of 2006 I bought Bryan, my husband, a new camera for his birthday and took over his old one. He has always been the photographer in the family and being so good at it I have never ventured there. Well, with no kids to worry about and more time on my hands, I found a new world opening up before me! I started looking at everything differently, analysing shapes, light and dark, colours. Bryan called them real “Carolee pictures” This was just so exciting!!! We had to go out taking photographs every weekend!!! Then came the urge to draw again. I haven’t done anything serious since I was 18, other than a few watercolours about 11 years ago.

In 2007 I gave up working full days, and started spending more time on a hobby I had not indulged in since my teenage years: drawing portraits in pencil and charcoal. One thing led to another, and I started dabbling with acrylics, but found them very frustrating as a medium. Still intrigued with the idea of working in colour, I started oil painting classes with the wonderful and dynamic Margie Johnson in 2008. The bug bit hard and fast, and I sold my first oil at the South African Society of Artists member’s exhibition in June 2008, which really started the ball rolling.

Since those first classes, I have attended various other workshops, and have rediscovered my love of portraiture that stems from my teenage years. I have also been exploring en plein air painting, as I love painting from life, and spending time outdoors in our beautiful city. This has provided much inspiration and many challenges.

I feel my wonderful journey of artistic enlightenment and fulfillment has only just begun, the future certainly looks exceedingly bright and exciting.

I gladly undertake commissions.

The procedure I prefer is:
· I do a short (approximately 1 hour) photo shoot at a mutually agreed venue
· I will require a non refundable deposit of R250 to cover the photography and initial costs
· We agree which photograph could be used as the basis for a charcoal drawing or oil painting
· On completion you decide whether you wish to purchase the art work. I normally sell a size A3
charcoal for approximately R800 (unframed) and a roughly 30cm X 40cm oil painting for R2 000
(unframed) less any deposit paid.
· Whether you wish to purchase the finished work or not, I retain all rights to it. If you do not fall in love with      it, I may exhibit and/or sell it to any interested buyer or gallery and may display it on any of my web pages.  Please see Portraits page.

"Mum To Be" and "New Born Baby" Photo shoot

I prefer to work in natural light in your own home but will discuss any preferences you may have.  Photographing the 'Mum to be' is best done about two or three weeks before baby is due.  This is a great opportunity to pamper yourself and show off your beautifully rounded tum!   The photo shoot will take approximately one hour.

Your baby is best photographed within the first two weeks of life when he is sleepy and well fed.  This will also take proximately one hour and will be organised in accordance with baby's schedule of the day.

Cost:  R500 per photo shoot which includes a CD of the best high resolution photographs and the discards in a separate folder.
